California Candidate Abel Maldonado And Family Business Owe $4 Million In Taxes, IRS Says
The Internal Revenue Service says former California Lt. Gov. Abel Maldonado and his family business owe more than $4 million in taxes, according to court documents reviewed by the Los Angeles Times.
Maldonado, one of two Republicans challenging eight-term incumbent Rep. Lois Capps (D) in California’s newly configured 24th Congressional District, served as co-owner of his family’s 6,000-acre farm in Santa Maria until shortly after charges surfaced that he and his wife owed the government $470,000. He severed ties with the farm in April.
Court records show that the Maldonado family farm, Agro-Jal, is also challenging an IRS finding that it underpaid its taxes by $3.6 million between 2006 and 2008, according to the Times story.
Maldonado said he wants to see the issue resolved, telling the Times that “the second we get a bill that correctly defines our tax liability, it will be paid.”
He will face his GOP opponent, Chris Mitchum, in a primary election on June 5.
